Learning Labs

Museum educators, known as LAB R.A.T.S. (for Radical Approach To the Subject), can bring a museum full of learning to your classroom! Mag-lav cars, pulley swings, pneumatic - powered hovercrafts, cylinders & pyramids, cups & socks and water wheels... are just some of the innovative learning tools featured in our acclaimed Learning Labs.

These age-appropriate labs were developed to help students learn integrated science math and art concepts through open-ended exploration. The labs support curriculum and address Illinois State Goals and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards. The Learning Labs serve over 25,000 students a year in over 40 school districts. Let your classroom be next!

FOR RESERVATIONS, PLEASE CALL 630-637-8000 or request a reservation online.

Patterns, Strategies & Number Sense - Grades Pre K-1

No Numbers MathSorting, classifying, patterning and geometry are explored in this unique lab. Children explore the language of mathematics as they gain understanding and insight using common objects. Analytical thinking, problem solving skills and spatial sense emerge during this hands-on, interactive lab.

(1 to 1-1/4 hours)

Cost for Labs:
One class: $200.00
Two classes, same day: $375.00
Three classes, same day: $535.00

NCTM Stds: K-2 Algebra; Geometry, Data Analysis & Probability; Problem Solving; Reasoning & Proof; Communications; Connections
Ill. State Goals: Early Elem 8.B.1; 9.B.1b; 9.B.1c

Magnet Exploration - Grades Pre K- 4

Child playing with magnetsTurn a needle into a magnet, hunt for hidden treasures, and discover the power of magnets. Students investigate such concepts as: magnetic fields and lines of force, north and south poles, conduction of magnetism, pole patterns and our magnetic Earth.

Late Elem 12.D.2b

Estimation Station - Grades K-3

Estimation StationHow many Skittles™ can fit into your hand? Most of a child's daily "real life" encounters with mathematics include estimation! Students learn to use referents such as different sized shoes, tiles, weights and stuffed animals to estimate length, capacity, mass, volume, distance, quantity and time.

(1-1/2 hours)

Cost for Labs:
One class: $200.00
Two classes, same day: $375.00

GeoSpace - Grades K- 5

Child with geometric shapesCylinders, cubes, spheres, and cones fill the air as students construct their own "geo-worlds." Geometric understanding begins with basic shapes and solids in the younger grades, and progresses to complex polyhedrons in older grades.

(1-1/2 hours)

Cost for Labs:
One class: $200.00
Two classes, same day: $375.00

Kids Design Engineering (KDE) - Grades 2-4

Boy designing a gadgetIn this highly acclaimed three-session program, students incorporate science, math, art and technology to solve engineering challenges using a pneumatic power system. A local district math coordinator said it best: "The framework for each step of the way is a wonderful model for all of us to adopt: awareness, tool practice, project plan, build time, test, retest. Sounds like the scientific method to me. I love it!" This program was developed with funding from the Illinois State Board of Education Center for Scientific Literacy.

(2 sessions at your school, 1 session at the Museum—
2 hours each session)

Cost:
$25 per student

(Minimum 20 students)

Ill. State Goals: Early Elem 11.B.1a; 11.B.1b; 11.B.1c; 11.B.1d; 11.B.1e; 12C.1a; 13.A.1a

Simple Machines in Action - Grades 3-5

Designed as a follow-up to the study of simple machines, the Simple Machines in Action Learning Lab will enable students to “do the math” as they work in cooperative groups at hands-on stations to observe, measure and record their observations of simple machines at work. This process learning is a powerful way to help students integrate concrete objects with the abstract concepts of force and work. Teacher extension materials provided.

(2 hours)
