NEW!  DuPage Children's Museum offers enhanced ESL Resources

DuPage Children’s Museum (DCM) is hard at work in their 20th Anniversary year, expanding on their Core Beliefs of respect for all children and their ability to learn, the power of play as a basis for constructing knowledge and the importance of the child-adult learning partnership.

Following these fundamental beliefs, a new ESL (English as a Second Language) Exhibit Resource Guide and program have been introduced at the Museum this spring, for use by agencies working with adult ESL students prior to a visit to DCM, or within the Museum (copies can be checked out from Visitor Services for use during a visit). Funding for this new DCM English as a Second Language program is provided by The Comcast Foundation.

An introductory guided tour and workshop was conducted for 37 ESL teachers and tutors, to get the program started, on April 12 and will be followed by a second one at the Museum this summer.  Students of the program are encouraged to bring their families to practice their ESL skills while having fun at DCM.

Tutors in the program begin by introducing the Museum with the ESL Exhibit Resource Guide, which is based on Museum exhibits and includes pictures of exhibits and related exploratory vocabulary.  The post-visit writing activity, “My Day at the DuPage Children’s Museum,” encourages students to speak with each other in English, reinforce their vocabularies and enhance their writing skills."  Tutors also have access to videos, to prepare students for a real outing, and field trips at the Museum to support their confidence-building efforts.

For more information about this program, please contact the DCM Community Access Network (CAN) coordinator at 630-637-8000 x4800.

DUPAGE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM:

DuPage Children’s Museum, a top Chicagoland cultural attraction, is a not-for-profit organization celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2007—an imagination celebration of the importance of play, as envisioned by our founders.

On any given day, about 1000 visitors come through the Big Red Door of DuPage Children’s Museum and engage in three floors of open-ended activities. It is a playful, fun environment where children and the important adults in their lives learn and play together in thoughtfully planned “neighborhoods” designed to promote skill development in math, science and the arts.

Thank you for all you do!  The Museum depends on donations and sponsorships for over 40% of its budget. Your support helps make a difference in the lives of thousands of children!
