NEW! Funding Will Support Updates to Math Connections Neighborhood

Naperville, Illinois - DuPage Children's Museum just received a $50,000 grant from the Tellabs Foundation, to help the Museum develop and re-design the Math Connections Neighborhood, on the top floor of the Museum.  The new permanent exhibit will anchor the Museum's math initiatives and is made up of approximately 20 open-ended, math-related activities for young children. "Early experience with, and understanding of, mathematics is fundamental to success in later studies of science and engineering," said Susan Broad, executive director of the Museum.

Interdisciplinary specialists in mathematics, early childhood development, elementary education and related fields will help develop the updated exhibit activities. The Museum plans to open the new exhibit in Autumn 2007.

DuPage Children's Museum, just north of downtown Naperville, has been serving area families since 1987, with a mission to stimulate curiosity, creativity, thinking and problem solving in young children through self-directed, open-ended experiences, the integration of the arts, science and math, and the child-adult learning partnership.

“Since our move to Naperville in 2001, we see some 300,000 visitors each year,” said Executive Director Susan Broad, “This generous gift from the Tellabs Foundation will significantly increase our ability to better serve children with their development of early childhood math skills.”

The Tellabs Foundation was established by Tellabs, a global telecommunications equipment provider based in Naperville, Illinois. The Foundation supports the priority areas of education, health and the environment in communities where Tellabs employees live and work. Since its creation in 1997, the Foundation has given more than $8 million to nonprofit organizations. More information about the Tellabs Foundation can be found at www.tellabs.com/about/community.shtml.
