Etienne Demarteau Recognized for Outstanding

Volunteer Service by the City of Naperville

Etienne Demarteau was recognized for his outstanding volunteer service to DuPage Children’s Museum (DCM), as a recipient of a Naperville Youth Service Award.  He received his Naperville Youth Service Award certificate, signed by Mayor A. George Pradel, in a ceremony on November 7.  On October 25 he was invited to meet Jenna Bush at her presentation to the Mayor and City Council.

Demarteau, who became a Museum Volunteer on June 17, 2006, volunteers weekly interacting with the children in the exhibits at the Museum, provides good customer service and assists staff.  “Through his work at the Museum, he has accumulated 164 hours of service and exemplifies the very best in the developmental assets of ‘Service to Others,’” according to the Museum’s Volunteer Coordinator, Diane Ernst. “He portrays an outstanding attitude and is quick to help visitors and staff..  He also regularly stays after closing to help staff with cleanup and is always willing to lend a hand with visitor surveys and other tasks.” Demarteau has also been recognized three times recently by Museum staff for his outstanding service.

Demarteau explains how volunteering has changed his life, “Police, firemen, museums and many more are a few things that I took for granted. However, as I grew older, I came to realize that I lived in a self-absorbed bubble. I decided to pop my bubble and give back to the community. Since I have loved kids all of my life, I decided to volunteer at the Museum. From the first day, I felt at home. Watching kids learn and play are events that deeply touch my heart and have positive effects that will affect the rest of my life. These kids inspired me to do more and I also started to volunteer at my high school in the Key Club and at my Chinese school. Volunteering has become a part of my personality, part of my soul.”

DUPAGE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM:

DuPage Children's Museum helps kids learn how to succeed.  Throughout any given day, about 1000 visitors come through the Big Red Door of the Museum in Naperville, Illinois to engage in 3 floors of hands-on activities. It is a playful, fun environment where children 6 months to 10 years old and the important adults in their lives learn and play together in thoughtfully planned “neighborhoods”, with exhibits and programs designed to promote skill development in math, science and the arts. It is designed to prepare kids for a future where curiosity, creative thinking, imaginative problem solving and learning skills will be needed to interact with technology that is yet to be invented, to solve problems we can’t imagine and work in new kinds of jobs that don’t exist today.

2007 is an Imagination Celebration of the importance of play for DuPage Children’s Museum, a top Chicago area cultural attraction, celebrating 20 years as the place where learning comes in to play™!  The Museum is a non-profit organization and depends on donations and sponsorships for over $4 of every $10 of its annual budget. Your media support helps us reach families and makes a difference in the lives of thousands of children in our community.  Thank you for all you do!
