DCM CHAMPIONS: STATUS UPDATE – Monday, July 20, 2009

Gov. Quinn signs Illinois Jobs Now! Capital Bill

Last week Governor Quinn signed into law bills that created the $31 billion Illinois Jobs Now! plan. Through these bills DuPage Children's Museum was allocated a total of $1.94 million that will be applied to retire the Museum’s long-term bonds. Effectively this will reduce our existing debt from $9.4 million to $7.46 million.

This is an important action that takes us a step closer toward achieving our goal of retiring our long-term bonds and becoming a private, nonprofit organization on public land.

Thank you CHAMPIONS for your efforts on this project! Many of you answered our earlier request to call your State Representative and State Senator to tell them to ask Governor Quinn to make a commitment to provide the significant funding necessary to put DuPage Children's Museum on public land.

We are especially gratified that the $1.94 million awarded in this project represents collaboration by five different state legislators who recognized the importance of maintaining DuPage Children's Museum as a vital early childhood development resource in our region.

Please join us in thanking Illinois State Senators Kirk Dillard (District 24) and Randy Hultgren (District 48), and Illinois State Representatives Patricia Bellock (District 47), Mike Connelly (District 48) and Darlene Senger (District 96). They all chose to step up now to help us retire a portion of our outstanding debt. By including DCM in a portion of their capital funding recommendation, these hard-working elected officials recognized the broad scope of the audience that visits DuPage Children's Museum each year, as well as the need to keep it accessible to all visitors regardless of physical, social and economic barriers.

Please call or contact these fine representatives to say thank you for supporting DuPage Children's Museum with regards to their allocation in the Illinois Jobs Now! bill.

DCM Board members have been working tirelessly to this goal and will use this significant funding to continue to encourage government entities at the local and regional levels to help us retire our debt once and for all. We will keep you posted on our progress toward achieving our goal.

Please stay tuned for your next action alert. In the meantime, here are some other actions you can take as an advocate...

  • Bring your citizenship to bear. Encourage commitment from elected officials with whom you may have a connection or a visibility opportunity. Tell them that you believe they should act to ensure the financial stability of one of the region’s most valuable resources.

  • Make a donation to DCM. Your financial support has never been more critically needed. Click here to make a donation online.

  • Recruit more CHAMPIONS. Tell Your Friends what you are doing and ask them to visit this Web site to sign up to be a DCM CHAMPION. Encourage them to join you as an advocate on behalf of the work DCM does for children and families in the community.
