Aunty Math Aunty Math Challenges You!

Hello! Aunt Mathilda Mathews here. Whenever my nephews Barney and Danny, and my niece, Gina, visit me I usually have a math challenge for them to try to solve. Sometimes they have a challenge for me!

Every other week, I will be sharing my math challenges with you. I hope that they will be interesting and fun for you to try!

Gina and her cousins like to figure out different ways to solve these Aunty Math challenges. They each have their favorite way to solve my challenges.

Drawing Pictures

Gina is best at this. Her pictures cover my refrigerator.

Crayons

Looking for a Pattern

Gina likes to use this strategy a lot.

Using Objects (such as buttons, beans, etc.)

Gina likes this one too, but we have to be careful not to use raisins because she eats them before the problem is solved!
Beans
Theater Stuff

Acting out the Problem

This is Danny's favorite strategy. He is a natural born "ham" - I mean actor.

Guess and Check

This is another favorite with Danny. Sometimes he tries out his idea and it's perfect, although it can be frustrating if it doesn't work.

Making a List or Chart

Barney prefers this method because it is organized, just like he is.

Visualizing the Solution

Barney can usually do this pretty well. He just "sees" the solution to the problem in his head. Then he has to figure out how to explain this solution to others. That can be the hard part.

Ready, Set, Go!

I hope you have fun solving the challenges. When you have figured out an answer that makes sense to you, then please share your answer and how you thought about it with a friend, a parent or a teacher. Also, please tell them what thinking strategy you used. Did you use one of Danny, Barney and Gina's strategies? Did you solve it a different way? Remember, there is no "best" way, except the way that makes sense to you!

...on to...The Current Challenge!
